Melancholy news

The Fishwives have a very impressive gig booked on September 1 at The Horseshoe Tavern. More details to follow when they get here. On the sad side, I have learned from guitarist James Gilbert that the band's percussion master and youngest Fishwife Atticus Mitchell has suffered a fractured collarbone that will halt production of the band's newest, untitled future EP and will stop the band from playing from any gigs in the near future. I think it's safe to say we all wish Atty a speedy recovery. Get well soon!

This blog is the only place you can get this kind of info on the net, even before the band's MySpace and Facebook groups. Follow this blog to hear everything Fishwives first, right here!

The Re-redemption-ing: Part 2 of The Fishwives @ The Opera House

The Fishwives hit the stage with a vengeance, storming the set with their new hit song, Out of Your Way. The track was hot and well received by their young die hard fans, faintly falling back on the synth-heavy Rum & Band-Aids. It was a strong start for a band that just got on its feet for the summer. The next song on the set list was Sunspots & Signalfires. Lead by the soothing then brash, up and down vocals of Brandon the audience had to keep up with the eccentric singer. Not only was the singer bringing but the rest of the guys. A very funky and rockadelic bassline, accompanied with the harmonic keyboard/guitar combo and upbeat and entertaining drumline filled out what turned out to be the band's longest song of 3:52. (check out the rest of the blog for the lyrics to all of the Fishwives' songs, to be fully completed and updated soon). The young quartet brought their local and loyal fanbase back to planet Earth with a pair of songs of the Fishwives' EP "No Time For Swordplay". Shrug and Rum & Band-Aids gave the crowd what they wanted to hear with some familiarity, even though this blogger couldn't get over the band's new stuff. Before you knew it, in came Carapace, the mellow rock side of the new fishwives material we were looking for. The soft guitar intro led into the total unexpected; Caleb Mitchell playing the glockenspiel. DJ Ding Dong gives his approval. Anyways, the track continued on, coming to a climax that gave way for a glock solo full band rockout, eventually calming down to the refrain. The Opera House was brought to new highs that night. As the song ended, there was a sense amongst the band's fans that there is a good chance these guys will make it one day along the road. After the Fishwives played Before It Spreads, the band prepared for their last song of the night, and many say they saved the best for last. Devil's Daughter. On what we can assume to be the remaining song Caleb will sing for the band (after disarming Disarmed from their foreseeable setlist), we're all glad that we stuck around past midnight at the House. Who knew that a simple guitar riff and a snare drum could carry a song for more than a minute. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the rainstick, jinglebell and shaker excellence of James and Brandon to go along. Along with the pounding drumming of Atticus Mitchell, the band came together as one in a prismatic performance for the ages. The Fishwives left the stage with the crowd begging for more. And in the subsequent weeks after the show, including performances at Ranch Relaxo, The Great Escape Bookstore, The Silver Dollar Room and Mullen's Pub, the band gave the crowd what they wanted. Hopefully these young men, "the next heartthrobs" as one haggard drunkard so put it, can please the crowd for years to come.

It pays to be praised

It seems that every time I turn on the computer these days, there's somebody saying something nice about The Fishwives. Bobby B of "Itsnotthebandihateitstheirfans" at a fellow blogspot blog reviewed the Fishwives' performance @ Rancho Relaxo, and he had nothing bad to say about the band. Such words and/or phrases include, "suprisingly mature", "the ability to shine in ways that too many of their contemporaries do not" and "I was impressed".

Another media sighting

The Fishwives are making their rounds, and can now be listened to on CBC Radio 3, New Music Canada. A great site for up-and-coming bands, you may be able to here The Fishwives on the radio! Who'da thunk it? http://radio3.cbc.ca/

UofT's biggest paper The Varsity reviews "No Time For Swordplay EP"

Link to the review: http://www.thevarsity.ca/article/19314.

As The Fishwives continue to play gig after gig, club after club, the scene-busting gang continue to gather more and more media attention. First it was North by East West, with their article telling us what we already know: YOU SHOULD KNOW THE FISHWIVES! Here's their article: http://www.nxew.ca/2009/05/you-should-know-fishwives.html.

While this band is running its summer tour before packing it up for the summer, they continue to work on new material every passing day and touch up old material. Need proof? Listen to "Before It Spreads" on the EP and then listen to the newly-recorded live version on the band's MySpace account: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=383048269. This is all lead up to a LP to be released as early as July, possibly August. Look out for these guys, because it won't be too long before they make it to the top. Check out the blog tomorrow for the conclusion of the Opera House recap, as well as newly-added lyrics to new Fishwives songs, instrument info and a new blog on the Rancho Relaxo and the Kingston Road Street Fest in a flash. All of this is setup for Saturday's big event: The Fishwives & The Silver Dollar Room. Stay tuned, fellow guppies!

Redemption: The Fishwives' grand reunion @ The Opera House

When I heard The Fishwives were back together for the summer, a wave of jubilation soared over me. The holy quaternity came together to work on new material and were ready to strut their stuff for a major music venue: The Underdogs Showcase Indie Music Festival, presented by HotboxXx. Slated to go on at May 16 at 11PM, me and my friends hit up the old 506 streetcar and head down to see our favourite band. Well, it turned out that things didn't go as well as planned. The show was running late and The Fishwives were now to go on at midnight! I remember thinking to myself, "Well, at least these $20 tickets will be worth it now, seeing as I get to see three bands before the Fishwives hit the stage". How more wrong could I be! Gus Knuckle was ending their setlist, and the song that they played wasn't that bad. The words were audible, guitar riffs were pretty inventive and they had an "interesting" drummer. "Made by a Virus" was the next band to perform. If you love thrashing power chords, loud repetitive bass and screaming non-stop that is the thrash genre, this band was for you. I did, however, like the drummer's bass drum gallops, and was the bright star in that band, but I'm still standing there waiting for the Fishwives all night. Malicious Muse was the next band to play, however my wits were at an end. I actually liked the band's variety in their songs, even though they leaned heavy on metal power chords. Each song sounded different, something hard to come by in metal, but they were like 2 minutes each. This made it seem like we were waiting forever.

Then it happened....

The clock struck midnight, the scene got all quiet, the band geared up and.....

....you'll have to read about it next week. Come back and hear everything about the Fishwives' setlist at the Opera House, including never-before-released lyrics. You can finally understand what Brandon's moaning about in the band's longest song at 3:52, Sunspots & Singalfires. Until then; lots of love, peace and happiness, rock and roll.
